What is veraison and why does timing matter?
Veraison is the onset of grape ripening — color change in reds, softening in whites. Once veraison begins, sugar accumulates and acid drops on a roughly fixed schedule. Earlier veraison in a hot summer means harvest lands in the hottest window, when acid retention is worst.
How much has veraison shifted?
In most warm-climate US and European growing regions, veraison has advanced roughly 10–20 days since the 1980s. Napa Cabernet has moved about two weeks earlier; Bordeaux Merlot similar. Cool-climate sites (Willamette, Finger Lakes) have shifted less but still meaningfully.
What is the Winkler index and what does 'drift' mean?
The Winkler index sums growing-season heat above 50°F to classify a region I–V by heat accumulation. Many historically Region II/III sites have drifted into Region III/IV — meaning the variety mix that suited the site historically no longer does.
What are practical adaptations?
Higher cordons, later-ripening clones, later-flowering rootstocks, canopy management for shade, block-level re-varietal planning, and night-harvest staffing plans for the hottest weeks.
