Corn (Midwest)
Corn belt planting is moving earlier, but the useful number isn't the shift — it's what's happening at silking. Silking-window heat stress has become the ceiling on yields in dry years. Earlier planting helps unless it pulls silking into a July heat dome.
Soybeans
Soy planting has followed corn earlier, but soy's yield ceiling is set at pod-fill (mid-August to mid-September) — a period that has trended drier across the corn belt. Longer-day varieties help if you can protect late-season moisture.
Wheat
Winter wheat: warmer fall soils are extending the effective planting window in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Spring wheat in North Dakota and Montana is more constrained by heading heat than by frost, so date optimization now has to consider mid-summer heat.
Almonds and other tree nuts

- Corn belt planting dates have moved roughly 5-10 days earlier since the 1980s, driven by warmer April soils, earlier fieldwork windows, and longer-day hybrids. Projections suggest another 3-7 days over the next decade in most of Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana.
- Are earlier planting dates always better?
- Not always. Earlier planting exposes emerging corn to cold-soil stress and increases the chance of a hard freeze after emergence. It also pulls silking into an earlier, historically hotter window. Optimal date is a moving target.
- How is wheat planting changing?
- Winter wheat planting in the Great Plains is trending later as fall soil temperatures stay warm enough for extended sowing. Spring wheat farther north has more front-end flexibility but faces heat stress at heading.
- What about almonds and grapes?
