Chill, bloom frost, and summer heat — the three variables that decide whether your orchard bears a crop worth picking.

1. Chill-hour decline

Deciduous tree fruits and nuts need a species-specific number of chill portions between roughly November and February to break dormancy and bloom uniformly. California's Central Valley has lost measurable chill over the last three decades and is projected to keep losing it. 2. Bloom-window frost

Earlier bloom + still-occurring hard freezes = greater exposure. Michigan cherries, Washington apples, and Georgia peaches have all had multi-billion-dollar frost losses in the last decade. 3. Summer heat stress and fruit quality

Above roughly 95F, apples sunburn, cherries soften, and photosynthesis stalls. Consecutive 100F days during sizing are especially damaging. Shade netting, evaporative cooling, and row orientation are the physical mitigations. Cultivar and rootstock choice is the multi-decade decision.

4. Water — the multiplier on everything above

Common questions

Which orchard crops are most exposed to chill loss?
High-chill cultivars of almonds, cherries, apples (especially Honeycrisp and Fuji), and pistachios. California's Central Valley is the front-line region; the Pacific Northwest is a decade or so behind on the same curve.
Is bloom frost getting better or worse?
Worse. Warmer late winters push bloom earlier, but hard-freeze events still occur through April in most US orchard regions. The net exposure window has grown, not shrunk.
How hot is too hot for apples?
Sustained 95F+ during fruit sizing causes sunburn, softening, and internal browning. Above 100F for multiple consecutive days you're managing damage, not yield.
Can citrus grow farther north as the climate warms?
Slowly, in some regions — but northward expansion is capped by hard-freeze events, which are still occurring even as means warm. Freeze-hardy rootstocks matter more than latitude for now.
