Water reliability is now a first-order variable in almost every US farm plan. Here's the working operator's version of the water question.
Start with a real crop-water budget
Peak demand, seasonal total, and stage-by-stage sensitivity. Extension crop-water charts by county are the free starting point. Actual on-farm demand varies with soil, canopy, and microclimate — sensors help.
Deficit irrigation, when it works
- Wine grapes. Controlled deficit through veraison improves quality. Well-studied.
- Almonds. Regulated deficit irrigation during hull-split is standard.
- Corn silking. Deficit here is high-risk — pollination is the single most water-sensitive stage.
- Alfalfa. Skipping late cuttings is a viable deficit strategy in dry years.
Water rights and reliability
In prior-appropriation states (most of the US West), water-right seniority determines who gets cut first in a curtailment year. Knowing your priority date and your basin's call history is more useful than knowing the current-year forecast.
Groundwater under compliance
California's SGMA, Arizona's active management areas, and comparable programs elsewhere are moving groundwater from an open resource to a regulated one. Long-term farm planning under these regimes requires assumptions about future allocation, not just future weather.
The 10-year picture
Snowpack-fed regions face earlier melt and lower summer flows. Reservoir refill is projected to be more variable, not lower on average. Multi-year drought clustering is projected to increase. Archipel's per-field drought-severity trajectories reflect these projections directly.

- Applying less water than crop demand at specific growth stages where the yield or quality penalty is small, in order to save water for stages where it isn't. For wine grapes, controlled deficit through veraison is standard practice. For corn, it's high-risk near silking.
- How much irrigation water does my crop need?
- Depends on crop, region, and stage. As a starting point: corn peaks near 0.30-0.35 inches/day at silking; alfalfa ~0.30 inches/day mid-summer; wine grapes ~0.10-0.20 inches/day; mature almonds ~48-56 inches/year total. Local extension services publish crop-water requirements per county.
- Should I invest in on-farm water storage?
- If your surface-water right is unreliable in dry years, yes. Storage capital scales; typical payback in the US West is 5-15 years, depending on water right seniority and pumping costs.
- Is groundwater a safe long-term plan?
- Depends on the aquifer. Ogallala aquifer counties in the Southern Plains are drawing down at rates that make the current cropping mix unsustainable within 20-30 years. California's Central Valley is under groundwater sustainability plans that will cap pumping in many basins.
- How do I plan for a drought I can't predict?
- Multi-year drought severity indices (PDSI, SPI) plus regional climate projections give you a probability distribution, not a forecast. Design for the 90th-percentile dry year on your ground, not the average one. Archipel's agriculture reports include per-field drought-severity trajectories.
