Climate adaptation checklist for farms.
A working playbook for adapting a real operation — data, hybrids, water, insurance, infrastructure. Run it once, review it quarterly.
The nine-step playbook
- Baseline your field data. Assemble 30 years of local weather station history for each field: last-frost date, GDD accumulation, extreme-precip counts, drought severity, and (for perennials) chill portions. This is your starting point for every projection.
- Project the 10-year window. Run a per-field projection of season windows, chill trajectory, heat-day counts, and drought severity for the next 10 years. This is what actually informs replant, irrigation, and hybrid decisions.
- Choose hybrids and cultivars for the future climate. Row crops: split maturities to spread pollination. Perennials: choose cultivars and rootstocks matched to the projected chill and heat profile, not the historical one.
- Lock in water reliability. Know your water-right priority. Model your worst-year budget. Consider on-farm storage where seniority is thin. For groundwater regions, plan against future allocation caps.
- Harden the highest-value stages. For orchards, invest in bloom-frost protection where it pencils out. For row crops, protect August moisture through residue and cover crops. For vineyards, plan smoke-testing capacity ahead of harvest.
- Diversify at the field and farm scale. Different maturities, different cultivars, different fields with different microclimates. Diversification is the cheapest form of adaptation.
- Re-underwrite your insurance. Crop insurance coverage levels that were rational 10 years ago may not be now. Review MPCI, revenue protection, and supplemental products against your updated risk profile annually.
- Upgrade infrastructure with a 20-year climate lens. Tile drainage sizing, cold-storage capacity, irrigation efficiency, and building placement all outlive multiple crop generations. Design for the projected climate, not the historical one.
- Set a quarterly review cadence. Climate risk is not a one-time analysis. Re-run your projections at least quarterly, and revisit your adaptation plan every year. Archipel's per-field reports arrive on that cadence by default.
