Smoke exposure is now a routine risk across most of the western US ag belt. Here's what it actually does to vines, row crops, and orchard workers.
Wine grapes and smoke taint
Smoke phenolics reach the grape as free volatile compounds, bind to sugars in the berry as glycosides, and are released as ashy or medicinal flavors during fermentation and aging. Reds are more affected than whites (skin contact), and post-veraison exposure is worse than pre-veraison. Testing panels can quantify exposure before you pick. See also vineyard climate risk.
Row crops
Dense smoke reduces photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) reaching the canopy. Multi-week smoke exposure can shave a few percent off row-crop yields, especially in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies. Not the primary driver of a bad year, but real.
Tree fruits and harvest labor
The bigger risk for tree-fruit operations is often labor availability during the harvest window. AQI above 150 triggers mandatory respiratory protection under Cal/OSHA and other state rules; above 250, work generally stops. Losing a harvest week costs more than most farms plan for.
Worker safety AQI thresholds
- AQI 0-150. Normal operations. Sensitive workers may need accommodation.
- AQI 151-250. Respirator (N95) required for outdoor work in many states.
- AQI 251+. Outdoor work should generally stop; heavy exertion should stop earlier.

For vineyards, that means testing capacity locked in before harvest and blending flexibility. For orchards and row crops, it means labor plans that include N95 stockpiles and a written stop-work threshold. - Smoke phenolics (guaiacols, methylguaiacol, cresols) drift into vineyards, bind to grape sugars as glycosides, and release ashy or medicinal flavors during and after fermentation. Once bound, they cannot be removed reliably in the finished wine.
- How much smoke exposure causes taint?
- It depends on smoke composition, exposure duration, and variety. Red varieties are more affected because skin contact during fermentation extracts the phenolics. A dense multi-day exposure during veraison or after is high risk; a brief brown-air day early in season generally isn't.
- Does smoke hurt corn or soy yields?
- Modestly. Dense smoke reduces incoming solar radiation and can shift the spectrum — usually a small yield drag over a multi-week exposure, not a disaster. Extreme years have been measurable in the Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains.
- What AQI is safe for farm workers?
