What is a burn window?
The set of conditions under which a prescribed burn can be executed safely and legally: fuel moisture inside the prescription range, wind within limits and from a prescribed direction, temperature and humidity in range, and community air-quality forecast within tolerance.
When does the burn window open in a warming climate?
Historically, most temperate forests had wide spring and fall burn windows. Warming has narrowed the fall window (higher drought code, later greenup) and widened the spring window on the front end but compressed it on the back end. Windows are more valuable and more perishable than they used to be.
How does drought code drive the go/no-go?
DC below the prescription's lower limit means fuels won't carry; DC above the upper limit means fire can escape control. Most prescriptions in dry-conifer systems target DC 30–60, with tighter bounds on the top end as slope and stand structure raise risk.
What community coordination is required?
